The Port of Singapore’s container traffic went up 4.7 percent in July 2011 to 2.6 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from the same period last year, making this July the port’s busiest period in at least 19 months, according to an online report by the Journal of Commerce.
The port’s handling in July inched up 6.3 percent from June, the journal said, quoting Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore’s preliminary estimates.
Container handling at the port in 2010 rose 9.9 percent to 28.4 million TEUs from a year ago.
Total tonnage handled in July rose 5.2 percent to 45.3 million tonnes from the same period in 2010. Overall tonnage handling in July dropped 0.7 percent from June, mainly from an 8.2 percent fall in oil throughput.
