On August 16, the Grete Maersk became the first Maersk Line ship to call at the newly opened Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT) in Vietnam on its route from Asia to North America.
The 9,038 TEU-capacity Grete Maersk is one of the ships on Maersk Line’s “Transpacific 6? service from China to Los Angeles. Ships on the TP6 service began calling Vietnam last year at the nearby SP-PSA International Terminal in Vung Tau before the Cai Mep terminal opened in March this year.
CMIT was established on January 26, 2007 as a joint venture between the Vietnam-based Saigon Port, Vietnam National Shipping Lines, and APM Terminals, a sister company of Maersk Line.
Located in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, CMIT offers shipping lines fast and direct access to and from the main shipping markets in Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
CMIT has a 14-meter channel depth with 16.5-meter depth alongside its berth, and over 36 hectares of container yard.
