The operator of the ITC International Port in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, is buying cranes valued at US$28 million as it gears for the port’s opening next year.

International Transportation and Trading Joint Stock Co. (ITC) recently signed a contract with Germany’s Kocks Krane and Finland’s Cargotec to commission cranes for the port located in the city’s District 9, according to a report published online by the Vietnamese Seaports Association.

Under the contract, Kocks Krane will supply ITC 40-ton ship-to-shore (STS) cranes and rubber tire gantry (RTG) cranes of the same capacity.

Construction of the 41-hectare ITC port in Phu Huu Ward, District 9, started in June 2010. Once completed the $180-million port can handle 2,000-TEU container ships and 36,000-DWT ships, the report said.

A 600-meter pier is set for operation in the second quarter of next year under the plan’s first phase of development. ITC said it expects half of its order of four STS cranes and eight RTGs delivered in the first quarter of 2013 in time for the launch.

ITC said the machines are environment-friendly and will run on electricity instead of oil and feature lower energy consumption.
