THE Port of Manila (POM) collected P4.87 billion in July, 1.2% or P58 million more than the same month last year’s P4.812 billion.
POM — the Bureau of Customs’ (BOC) second-biggest collection district – has met all its monthly targets since the start of the year. For January, it registered a surplus of P890 million; in February, P1.38 billion; March, P1.2 billion; April P1.5 billion; May, P731 million; and June, P96 million.
Apart from POM, the only other collection district under the so-called billionaire ports that surpassed its July goal was Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). NAIA had a goal of P1.53 billion but took in P1.62 billion, an improvement of 5.9%.
Contributing 74% to the collection efforts of POM is its Formal Entry Division, which raked in P3.58 billion against its target of P3.53 billion.
Also turning in a positive performance for July were the sub-port of Masinloc, which collected P117 million; Harbour Center, with an aggregate collection of P564 million; Informal Entry Division, P19 million; Public-Private Bonded Warehouse Division, P122 million; Miscellaneous Manufacturing Bonded Warehouse Division, P46 million; Bonds Division, P8 million; Warehouse Assessment Division, P1 million; Food Terminal Inc, P1.86 million; Laguna Customshouse, P83 million; Rosario Customshouse, P24 million; and Postal Customs Office, P1.55 million.
The collection districts also boosted revenue generation from non-traditional sources in July. A total of 30 valuation and classification review committee cases were resolved at the POM, expected to generate an additional P7.6 million for the district. Likewise, eight demand letters were issued to five surety companies to settle/liquidate their outstanding accounts amounting to P7.3 million.
POM officials vowed to exert extra effort to meet collection targets for the rest of the year. The district is expected to cough up an additional P1.65 billion this year, representing 33% of the P5-billion additional revenue target for the entire BOC in 2010. The remaining P3.35 billion is being distributed to 11 other BOC collection districts.
