DHL Express Philippines, part of Deutsche Post DHL, marked Global Volunteer Day 2012 with over 700 employees taking part in a charity fun run in McKinley Hill, Taguig City as part of its global drive to give back to local communities and to inculcate a passion for volunteerism among employees.

Proceeds of the fun run have been earmarked for the refurbishment of classrooms and library of the Barangay Rizal Makati Day Care Center, which was badly damaged during the recent monsoon rains and floods, displacing at least 40 students. The DHL Express team also dug into their own pockets to raise an estimate of P130,000, which will contribute towards the funds to be used for the refurbishment of the center.

“DHL has always been very active in numerous community works in Philippines. Ensuring sustainability is an integral part of DPDHL’s corporate culture. Through this year’s Global Volunteer Day event, we are glad to be able to make a difference to the lives of the children affected by the series of natural disasters that happened recently,” said Yasmin Khan, Senior Vice President, DHL Express Southeast Asia.
“Giving back to the community is a key priority for DHL Express Philippines. Through the Global Volunteer Day, we aim to instill the value of social responsibility and encourage participation among our employees. We are heartened by the turnout at the charity fun run, especially the support shown by our customers. This is a very meaningful event as the participants not only get to spend time with their families but they are also doing a good cause to help the less fortunate,’’ said Nurhayati Abdullah, DHL Express Philippines country manager.

Introduced in Asia Pacific in 2008, Volunteer Day has expanded into Americas, Middle East, Africa and Europe over the years, and continues to build on its success by involving more employees than ever before. In 2011, the initiative was rolled out globally with tremendous success – 60,000 volunteers in over 130 countries and territories participated in more than 600 community programs.
