The Philippine Department of Transportation and Communications has awarded the consultancy contract for the Puerto Princesa airport project to Incheon International Airport Corp (IIAC), operator of South Korea’s biggest international airport.

The notice of award for the consultancy project worth KRW4.678 billion or $4.1 million was dated Oct. 15, 2012 and signed by then acting Transport Secretary Rafael Santos prior to the installation of now transport chief Joseph Emilio Abaya.

The P5-billion Puerto Princesa Airport Development Project involves the rehabilitation or improvement of the Puerto Princesa Airport to meet standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

It covers construction of landside facilities, including a passenger terminal building, control tower, administration and operation building, cargo terminal building, rescue and firefighting building and other support facilities.

It also involves construction of new apron and connecting taxiways, upgrading of the 2.6-kilometer runway and its strip as well as provision of new navigational and traffic control equipment.

The contract is the second signed by the Philippines with the Export-Import Bank of Korea involving the Puerto Princesa project.

The first contract covers a $71.6-million or P3 billion loan to construct a new passenger terminal with facilities and an access road.
