State-owned port operator Indonesia Port Corporation (IPC) II said the company that can attract the big ships to dock at the New Priok port in Indonesia will be named its partner operator by the end of January 2013.
The New Priok port, located in Kalibaru, north Jakarta, is set to become Indonesia’s main transshipment port by 2015 as the existing Tanjung Priok port, the country’s busiest port, is already working beyond capacity.
Construction of the first phase of the New Priok is expected to be completed by 2014. It will have a total capacity of five million 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs). When phases two and three are completed by 2023, the new port will have a total capacity of 18 million TEUs.
Reports said the New Priok will be one of six container ports that will make up the East-West Pendulum, a sea corridor that will boost the country’s economic growth and improve its attractiveness as a shipping destination.
IPC acquired the concession right to operate the New Priok port in September 2012 and has a 51 percent majority share in the port, media reports said.
