With an overall slowdown in the movement of goods across borders, international airfreight contracted by 1.2 percent in October year-over-year, with traffic growth for the full-year 2012 forecast to be flat , says the Airports Council International (ACI).
The ACI’s worldwide traffic results for October showed several major international freight hubs experiencing sharp declines from the same month a year ago. Key hubs Incheon, Paris, and Anchorage observed year-over-year falls of 1.9 percent, 5 percent and 13.1 percent, respectively.
On a rolling 12-month basis, global airfreight volume shrank by 1 percent from the corresponding period the previous year.
“As we approach the end of 2012, global airfreight traffic is expected to be flat as compared to 2011,” said Rafael Echevarne, ACI world’s economics director. “Order shipments of high value added goods, which make up a large component of the volume of international airfreight, have been curtailed in tandem with the slowdown in international trade.”
According to the World Trade Organization, the expansion of world trade will slow to 2.5 percent in 2012 from 5 percent in 2011 as a result of slowing global output.
