Asia Airfreight Terminal (AAT), the second cargo terminal handler at Hong Kong International Airport, announced a 12 percent expansion in its cargo volume for November 2012 year-on-year as a result of strong demand for new high-tech products.

Throughput for November was 69,150 tonnes. Of this, export cargo registered 49,887 tonnes, up 13 percent against the same month last year; import cargo was 18,869 tonnes, a 9 percent growth; and transshipment volume recorded 395 tonnes, down 11 percent.

From January to November 2012, the cumulative shipments reached 650,816 tonnes for a 2 percent improvement over the previous period. By category, export tonnage was 451,302 tonnes, up 3 percent. The import tonnage registered 194,055 tonnes, representing a 2 percent growth. Transshipment volume dropped 45 percent to 5,458 tonnes.

Kenneth Yeung, general manager of corporate development, said the increase in traffic for November was driven by the launch of a number of new hi-tech consumer products. “We saw an uptick [in] demand in the export to North America and Europe, and import from Southwest Pacific.”

He added that they have seen a strong rebound in traffic over the previous months that would make their annual performance in 2012 “conclude slightly better than expected.”
