Singapore Changi Airport handled 2.5 percent more airfreight in January year-over-year, as  shipments picked up ahead of the Lunar New Year period.

A total of 140,300 tonnes of cargo passed through Changi Airport during the month compared to 136,843 tonnes for the same period last year, an official company statement said today.

Meanwhile, Singapore’s container port recorded a traffic increase of 3.4 percent in the same month compared to January 2012, according to data from the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA).

About 2.63 million 20-foot-equivalent units were processed at the port last month from 2.54 million TEUs in the corresponding period last year.

Singapore’s air and sea freight throughput last year told contrasting stories. For the whole of 2012, Changi Airport saw its cargo volumes decline 3.2 percent to 1.81 million tonnes, suppressed by uncertainties in the global economy.

The Port of Singapore handled 31.6 million TEUs in 2012, a 5.7 percent increase over 2011 and a historic high despite the year’s global economic uncertainties and maritime industry difficulties, the MPA said.
