The first of Maersk Line’s ships in the Triple-E series, composed of the largest container vessels in the world, was yesterday named Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller in a ceremony held in South Korea.

Ane Maersk Mc-Kinney Uggla officially named the ship after her late father, Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller, who passed away in April 2012, in christening rites at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering shipyard.

The Triple-E ship measures 400 meters long, 59 meters wide, and 73 meters high, with a capacity of 18,000 TEUs (20-foot-equivalent units). It is designed for slower speeds and maximum efficiency, and emits 50 percent less carbon dioxide per container moved than the current average on the Asia-Europe route, Maersk Line said.

The Danish shipping line has ordered 20 of these vessels, which will be phased gradually over the next couple of years into the AE10 service plying the Asia-Northern Europe trade lane.
