After receiving a permanent license in July this year to operate under its own legal entity in Myanmar, Damco is now assisting its clients in opening up supply chains in the country.
This comes after the global logistics company has taken initial steps to set up its own country office and established a container freight station operation in Yangon, a company statement said.
It is currently working closely with the UK-based Institute for Human Rights and Business and the Danish Institute for Human Rights to ensure that the UN Guiding Principles on Human Rights are applied, the statement added.
In May 2012, Damco participated in consultations with NGOs, local companies, and diplomats that led to the establishment of a resource center within the British Council in Yangon.
Since then, Damco has accompanied customers to meet local trade associations, conduct market studies, and look at both vendor sourcing and setting up container freight station and container yard operations on the ground.
“We have an immediate implementation plan as well as a long-term one to set up logistics capability and infrastructure in Myanmar,” said Damco cluster manager Kiattichai Pitpreecha.
“This will allow our customers to open up their supply chains and sourcing operations in the country, whilst ensuring the highest standards are met in terms of meeting the principles of the UN Global Compact.”
Myanmar, with about 60 million people, is implementing economic and political reforms after it was opened to international trade in 2012.
