A brand-new car terminal has begun operating at Boom Baru Port, South Sumatra province’s biggest river port located about 100 kilometers from Palembang in Indonesia, to meet rising demand from the province, reports The Jakarta Globe.
State-owned port operator Pelabuhan Indonesia II, which operates the new car terminal, said the facility, sitting on 2,000 square meters of land, can unload 300 cars a day.
The terminal targets newly built cars shipped from assembly plants in Jakarta bound for Sumatra. Shippers prefer transporting the vehicles by water from Tanjung Priok port to the island because it is cheaper and safer than land transport, said Pelindo II, or Indonesia Port Corporation (IPC).
“The strong demand for four-wheeled vehicles in Sumatra has prompted IPC to make use of spare land around the port,” a company statement declared.
“Now, delivery of four-wheeled vehicles from Tanjung Priok port in Jakarta to Palembang can be done within just 30 hours.”
The terminal kicked off operations by handling a roll-on-roll-off ship delivering 300 cars and multipurpose vehicles for marketing in Sumatra.
