CARGO volume handled by the Southern Philippines’ Cebu ports in the first three quarters of the year improved 4.35% to 22.561 million kilograms from 21.621 million kg in the same period last year, data from the Cebu Port Authority showed.

Of the total cargo throughput, domestic cargoes contributed 72.38% or 16.330 million kg while foreign cargoes handled reached 6.232 million kg or 27.62%.

In the third quarter alone, cargo volume increased 5.87% year-on-year to 7.833 million kg from 7.399 million kg.

Container throughput, however, decreased 0.25% to 469,857.25 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) for the first nine months of 2013 from 471,040.25 in the same period in 2012.

Domestic containers accounted for 61.14% or 287,280.75 TEUs of the total container traffic while foreign containers amounted to 182,576.5 TEUs or 38.86%.

Cebu ports also registered sound shipping traffic with 84,660 shipcalls for the first nine months, 14.46% more than last year’s 73,966 ships.

Of the total shipcalls, domestic vessels accounted for 83,950 while foreign ships made up 710.

Passenger volume for the first three quarters also rose 4.77% to 12.774 million from 12.193 million.
