SurabayaTrial operations at a new multipurpose terminal in Surabaya, East Java in Indonesia, are set to kick off next month.

State-run port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III (Pelindo III) will hold the trial operations at its US$299-million Teluk Lamong multipurpose terminal in East Java in mid-May, reports The Jakarta Post.

Two ship-to-shore cranes, five automated stacking cranes, and one automotive terminal tractor are expected to arrive sometime between end-April and early May.

Other installation equipment, such as cables, optic fibers, and terminal-supporting equipment, are currently undergoing clearance at Tanjung Perak Port’s custom and excise office.

Teluk Lamong was built to ease congestion at Tanjung Perak Port, East Java’s hub and the country’s second largest maritime gateway, which has seen increasing traffic every year.

In 2013, estimated annual traffic at Perak exceeded 2 million 20-foot-equivalent units, more than the port’s capacity of 1.2 million TEUs.

Pelindo III hopes to improve the dwell time at Perak from about 33 hours on average last year to 10 hours this year.

About 250 hectares of land at Teluk Lamong has reportedly been allocated for further expansion as Pelindo III anticipates an increase in demand.
