OOCL TaipeiHong Kong-listed Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) christened its newest 8,888-TEU newbuilding at a naming ceremony held on Changxing Island in Shanghai yesterday.

Named the “OOCL Taipei,” this SX-class container ship is the latest addition to the OOCL fleet and will serve the trans-Pacific trade, linking markets in Asia and North America.

OOCL Taipei, built by shipbuilder Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Company in China with financial support from DBS Bank, is the fifth of the eight 8,888-TEU vessels that OOCL has commissioned Hudong-Zhonghua to build.

The ship is designed and built for operational and energy efficiency, adopting the latest shipbuilding technologies to reduce energy consumption and minimize air emissions.

She has an overall length of 335 meters, breadth of 42.8 meters, and depth of 24.8 meters, with a designed draft of 13 meters and deadweight of about 100,400 metric tons.

The vessel will begin her service on OOCL’s Trans-Pacific CEC (China East Coast Express) sling with this port rotation: New York, Savannah, Charleston, Norfolk, via Suez Canal, Jeddah, Singapore, Cai Mep, Hong Kong, Shekou, Yantian, Singapore, and New York.
