Pelindo II, Indonesia’s state-owned port operator, announced that the Port of Tanjung Priok in north Jakarta, the country’s main shipment gateway, will have a new information technology system by mid-year to monitor vessel traffic online and help ease congestion, The Jakarta Post reports.
Pelindo II has reportedly set aside US$11.55 million for the installation of the IT system.
The port operator envisions eventually decreasing container idle time from six days to three.
It also plans to transform a 1,000-square-meter area of land at Terminal 3 into an international container terminal to further decongest traffic.
The IT system will also be set up at the Palembang, Pontianak, and Jambi ports in 2013.
Traffic at the Port of Tanjung Priok has been growing steadily, according to Pelindo II. Container throughput reached 3.7 million TEUs in 2009 and 4.7 million TEUs in 2010.
Container throughput reached its maximum capacity of 5 million TEUs last November 2011, highlighting the urgency for more investments in the port’s development, the company said on its website.
