The Port of Tanjung Priok handled a ship with a capacity of more than 4,500 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) on February 4, the first time the Indonesian state port accepted a vessel of this size.

The Diadema ship of Maersk Line, with a capacity of 4,546 TEUs and overall length of 291.68 meters, is the biggest ship so far to call at the port. Scheduled to dock at the Jakarta International Container Terminal (JITC) once a week, it will serve the Brisbane-Jakarta-Singapore-Malaysia-Brisbane route.

The arrival of a ship this size reflects the trust provided by the international shipping community to the Tanjung Priok port, said Richard Joost Lino, managing director of Pelindo II, the state-owned port operator.

The ship’s arrival is part of a memorandum of understanding for direct calls signed between Pelindo II and A.P. Moller-Maersk of Denmark on September 2011, a Pelindo II statement on February 10 said.

Lino said the regular arrival of the Diadema will attract other international carriers to use the Tanjung Priok port in Jakarta. To encourage more business and boost direct shipping, “we will fix and upgrade all the existing terminal facilities here,” he added.
