Malaysian ports posted an increase in container volume of 6.5 percent to 5.1 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the first quarter of 2012 year-over-year.
Port Klang was the top container port for the period January-March this year, registering a throughput of 2.46 million TEUs over 2.26 million TEUs for the same period a year ago, a growth of 9.1 percent, according to a report by Bernama, the Malaysian national news agency.
The Port of Tanjung Pelepas , meanwhile, had a throughput of 1.88 million TEUs for the first quarter compared with 1.79 million TEUs for the same period a year ago.
Except for three ports, all the ports in Malaysia posted a volume increase of 1 percent to 24 percent. Johor Port, Kuantan Port, and Miri Port, however, showed respective declines of 8.9 percent, 6.7 percent, and 0.7 percent.
