Cargo throughput at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) remained slow, sliding down slightly by 0.8 percent to 327,000 tonnes in April this year compared to the same period in 2011.
The decline in cargo volume was primarily due to a 5 percent year-on-year drop in imports and a 3 percent decrease in transshipments, HKIA said in a statement on May 20. Exports, however, grew by 2 percent.
Cargo activity with Southeast Asia outperformed other key regions, HKIA said.
“Air traffic performance in the coming months may be under pressure given the uncertain economic outlook,” said Stanley Hui Hon-chung, chief executive officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong, which operates and develops HKIA.
In the first four months of the year, a total of 1.3 million tonnes of cargo were handled, down 1.3 percent from the same period last year.
On a rolling 12-month basis, cargo tonnage dropped 5.4 percent to 3.9 million tonnes from the same period.
