Asia Airfreight Terminal (AAT) announced that its cargo volume in April 2012 dropped slightly compared with the same period last year as transshipment throughput experienced a downturn.

AAT, the second cargo terminal operator at Hong Kong International Airport, said volume dipped to 58,041 tonnes last month, a 0.4 percent slide year-on-year.

“Buyers are holding a cautious approach as the Eurozone situation is still volatile,” said Kenneth Yeung, AAT general manager for corporate development.

Export cargo registered 40,790 tonnes in April this year, down 0.1 percent compared to the same month last year. Import cargo volume was 16,787 tonnes, up 0.1 percent. Transshipment cargo volume was 465 tonnes, a drop of 39 percent against the corresponding period in 2011.

Cumulative export tonnage from January to April 2012 was 154,455 tonnes, a growth of 0.1 percent against the same period last year. Total import tonnage was 69,968 tones, representing a 4 percent year-on-year increase. Transshipment cargo volume slid to 2,018 tonnes, a reduction of 25 percent against the first four months of last year.
