Asia Airfreight Terminal (AAT), the second cargo terminal handler at Hong Kong International Airport, recorded a volume growth of 19 percent to 60,482 tonnes in January 2013 compared to the same period last year.

Export cargo registered 41,230 tonnes, up 24 percent against January 2012. Import volume was 18,347 tonnes, an increase of 7 percent year-over-year, while transshipment cargo volume surged 73 percent to 906 tonnes.

“Following the record-breaking tonnage performance last year, year 2013 begins with an encouraging growth in tonnage throughput,” said Kenneth Yeung, AAT general manager of sales and marketing.

He predicted that Hong Kong’s air cargo industry would get a boost from the forecast 4.5 percent growth in revenue this year of China’s electronics manufacturing industry, as he looks at a “steadier pace” of sector growth for the next three years if the North America and Europe economies continue to recover.

Meanwhile, AAT announced it completed on February 16 the upgrading of its cargo and Internet management systems designed to improve  customer service.
