Officials of legal metrology authorities from ASEAN member states have agreed to develop a document that will outline possible approaches to market surveillance of non-automatic weighing instruments (NAWIs) in the region.

The agreement was struck during the 27th Meeting of the ASEAN Consultative Committee on Standards and Quality Working Group on Legal Metrology (ACCSQ-WG 3) held July 13, 2017 in Myanmar.

NAWIs are weighing instruments that require the action of gravity to determine the mass and that need the intervention of an operator during weighing. They include retail scales, industrial scales, and weighbridges

Legal metrology is the application of legal requirements to measurements and measuring instruments.

Assisted by the National Metrology Institute of Germany, the ACCSQ-WG 3 is tasked to come up with standards and systems that can be adopted across ASEAN.

This initiative seeks to assist ASEAN in establishing an integrated single market and production base with a free flow of goods through the elimination of technical barriers to trade.

The meeting aimed to introduce the concept of market surveillance for NAWIs, get to know the market surveillance situation among ASEAN member states, and explore an ASEAN-wide approach on market surveillance of NAWIs.

It also provided participants with knowledge and best practices on market surveillance for metrology instruments.
