THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) is transforming its risk management group (RMG) to better address smuggling and illegal activities within the bureau.

Under Customs Administrative Order 6-2009 which took effect end of 2009, the RMG has been transformed into a Risk Management Office (RMO) now directly attached to the Office of the Commissioner.

The office is empowered to recommend policies to the Customs Commissioner designed to determine the identity or profile of persons involved in illegal activities, such as smuggling and corruption, within the bureau.

“To ensure a smooth transition in the institutionalization of RMO, incumbent officers and complement of the Risk Management Group shall function as the interim staff pending the selection of qualified personnel for the permanent positions of the RMO,” the order said.

The other RMO functions include conducting a continuing study or profile of importers, exporters, and custom brokers and maintaining a database of all smuggling cases and related information.
