The business sector in Indonesia has asked the government to revise aspects of a new regulation that enforced an air freight security management system on September 3, The Jakarta Post reported.
The air transportation director-general’s regulation calls for a new system of cargo inspection at major airports, which includes scanning single packages with X-ray machines by regulated agents, not by warehouse operators.
The salient points in need of review include security costs, cargo inspection procedures, and regulated agents, said Natsir Mansyur, Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry vice chairman for trade, distribution and logistics.
“The revision is necessary to ensure that local businesses are not negatively impacted by the implementation,” Natsir told The Jakarta Post over the phone.
Businesses decried the additional costs that such security checks would entail, saying they would impact on the competitiveness of their export products.
They also said the involvement of three regulated inspection agents was not just an extra expense, it would also lengthen the inspection procedure. Cargo inspection processes should be improved for a more efficient implementation of the regulation, they added.
