Cargo traffic at the Port of Hong Kong fell by 6 percent to 69.1 million tons in the second quarter of 2012 year-over-year, according to the official Xinhua news agency, citing the city’s Census and Statistics Department.

The department said that, for the period, Hong Kong’s inward cargo dropped by 4 percent to 40.9 million tons, while its outward cargo sank 9 percent to 28.2 million tons.

The port handled 5.9 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers in the second quarter of this year to register a 7 percent drop compared to the same period a year ago.

Of this, the volume of laden containers fell by 8 percent to 5 million TEUs, while empty containers also shrank in volume by 2 percent to 0.9 million TEUs.

Ocean vessel arrivals likewise declined by 4 percent to 7,800 for the second quarter of 2012 compared to the same period the previous year, as total capacity slipped by 2 percent to 102.5 million net registered tons.
