Some of Vietnam’ seaports, particularly the ports in Quang Ninh and Ha Tinh provinces, have experienced a rush in cargo throughput in the first nine months of 2018, raising volume traffic significantly, according to the Vietnam Maritime Administration.
From January to September, nearly 386 million tonnes of cargo were shipped through the country’s seaports, including 13.3 million twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers, an increase of 18% and 27%, respectively, from the same period last year.
In September alone, nearly 42.9 million tonnes of cargo were handled at seaports. including 1.4 million TEUs of containers, up 18% and 30%, respectively.
The largest volumes of shipments were recorded at the ports in Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau, Quang Ninh, and Hai Phong.
Other ports saw large annual increases in the volume of cargo including Ha Tinh (up 97%), Quang Nam (up 83.5%), and NgheAn (up 81%).
At Quang Ninh ports in particular, the number of containers handled rose sharply by 161% in the first eight months of this year due to the successful trial run of the container terminal at Cai Lan port, according to the agency.
However, several ports in Kien Giang and Quang Tri provinces reported decreases of between 32% and 67% in the volume of shipments.
