Containerized volume monitored by the Cebu Ports Authority (CPA) in southern Philippines grew 8.27% to 538,200 twenty-foot equivalent units in 2011 from 497,062 TEUs in 2010, thanks to strong performance of transshipment cargoes.

Transshipment containers jumped 49.74% to 4,823 TEUs from 7,222 TEUs, of which 7,180 TEUs were accounted for by loaded containers, up 383.34% from 1,485 TEUs; and 42 were represented by empty containers, 98.74% less than the 3,337 TEUs recorded in 2010.

Domestic containers accounted for 330,113 TEUs of the total container throughput, 13.8% more than the 290,046 TEUs handled in 2010.

Domestic outbound containers rose 15.39% to 148,694 TEUs from 128,860 TEUs in 2010. Of these, fully loaded boxes represented 99,606, up 16.81% from 85,269 TEUs; and empty containers, 49,087 TEUs, up 12.61%.

Empty inbound containers dropped 2.8% to 21,142 TEUs from 21,751 TEUs while loaded inbound containers registered a 14.95% improvement to 160,277 TEUs from 139,435 TEUs.

Import boxes rose 3.97% to 100,517 TEUs from 96,682 TEUs, where fully loaded containers accounted for 99,230 TEUs, a 3.78% rise; and empties, 99,230 TEUs, up 20.63%.

Export containers inched up 1.95% to 107,569 TEUs from 105,510 TEUs in 2010. Of these, fully loaded boxes reached 49,389 TEUs, down 3.42% from 51,137 TEUs; and empties, 58,180 TEUs from 54,373 TEUs, a 7% advance.

Most containers were handled at government ports controlled by CPA; only domestic containerized cargoes were handled at private ports.

Domestic boxes passing through private ports declined in all sectors, particularly domestic outbound ones which dropped 13.27% and inbound domestic containers which slipped 9.94%.

Boxes passing through government ports rose 18.62%.

Earlier, CPA reported total cargo throughput of 25.365 million metric tons (mmt) in 2011, a 5.4% increment compared to 24.056 mmt posted in 2010. The increase was attributed to strong performance of foreign import cargoes.
