FOLLOWING the lead of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) last month, the Cebu Ports Authority (CPA) slashed its wharfage fee by 50% to help Cebu exporters better weather the global economic crisis.

The order took effect last week in ports under CPA jurisdiction and applies until yearend. The move mirrors the cut implemented by PPA starting September 15, 2009 in all its controlled ports.

The wharfage fee for a 20-footer van is now P301.17 from P602.34 while the rate for a 40-footer van is P478.35 from P956.70.

The Philippine Exporters Confederation (Philexport) applauded the action of the CPA, saying it offers exporters relief from effects of the global economic crisis.

Of 75 Philexport members from the furniture industry in 2008, 12 no longer renewed their membership mainly because of factory closure.
