In an advisory dated April 29, the carrier said the cancellations are part of its ongoing efforts to improve on-time performance and reduce inconvenience to its passengers.
“We are doing this because we have seen an unprecedented level of disruption to our operations, and our passengers are experiencing extended delays and some on-the-spot cancellations,” Cebu Pacific explained.
In an earlier statement, it said efforts have been made to minimize the disruption to its passengers in the past week but the carrier realized “that current operating conditions, particularly in our Manila hub, necessitate a temporary reduction of flights.”
Flights are also being cut to create space in the carrier’s schedule for operational recovery, minimize rolling delays, and give passengers the chance to make alternate travel plans.
The flight cancellations follow a recent unauthorized access to the carrier’s rewards program GetGo’s application server. The server has since been secured, and the airline has been working with the National Privacy Commission on an investigation into the case.
However, Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) chief legal officer Atty. Wyrlou Samodio, in a television interview on April 29, said the aeronautics board is “examining every reason given by Cebu Pacific.”
“If there are violations, definitely they will be meted out with appropriate penalty,” Samodio said.
Cebu Pacific said it will continue to exhaust all means to inform passengers as early as possible of any flight schedule changes through the email addresses and mobile numbers provided upon booking. Passengers booked on cancelled flights no longer need to go to the airport, and can manage their bookings online instead.
Cebu Pacific has apologized to its passengers for the inconvenience, and said it is already working with airport authorities, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders to make things better for passengers.
Cebu Pacific said passengers on cancelled flights may opt to rebook flights for travel within 30 days from the original departure date, free of charge; reroute to/from alternate airports for travel within 30 days, subject to availability of seats; get a full refund; or place the full cost of the ticket in a Travel Fund.
Furthermore, passengers on cancelled flights will receive one round-trip travel voucher which they can use for future flights.
Affected guests may also manage their own booking through the “Manage Booking” section of the Cebu Pacific website (https://bit.ly/CEBmanageflight).
