Taiwan’s Evergreen Line last week christened the first of its newly built L-type vessel with a capacity of 8,508 TEUs (20-foot-equivalent units) in a naming ceremony held at the CSBC Corp. shipyard in Greater Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
The ship, christened Ever Living, is the first of 10 container ships of such capacity that the company ordered from CSBC in 2011 as part of its fleet expansion program.
The Ever Living is 334.8 meters long and 45.8 meters wide, has a a draft of 14.2 meters, and has 948 reefer plugs.
The ship will be deployed on the Far East-Europe route later this week.
Evergreen Marine is also ready to take delivery of more vessels larger than 8,000 TEUs.
Under its fleet upgrade plan, the container shipping operator is purchasing 30 L-type vessels and chartering ten 13,800-TEU vessels and five 8,800-TEU ships, all for scheduled delivery through 2015, a company statement said.
Evergreen said the fleet buildup is intended to help raise its competitiveness and cut fuel costs.
