American air cargo transportation company FedEx Express opened on October 3 a new SGD97 million (US$78.9 million) hub in Singapore that consolidates and boosts its Asia-Pacific operations.

The 282,700-square-foot South Pacific regional hub situated inside the Singapore Changi Airport combines air, ground, and clearance operations that used to be processed in three separate facilities in the city-state.

This will reduce internal cargo processing time from two hours to 10 minutes and automate package handling to cut manpower by 25 percent.

Besides serving the Singapore market, the new hub will also function as a transshipment point for Asia-Pacific shipments in and out of Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia including Laos and Cambodia.

The center will consolidate the operational strength of FedEx Express in the region and improve customers’ access to regional and global trade, the  company, a subsidiary of Memphis, Tennessee-based FedEx Corp., said.

“With the new facility, we aim to provide greater connectivity to the important trading lanes of the US and the EU for our customers,” said David Cunningham, FedEx Express president of Asia Pacific.
