Three members of the Grand Alliance are set to deepen their partnership with three counterparts from the New World Alliance by combining their services on the Asia-US east coast (USEC) via Suez from mid-May, a move expected to lead to capacity rationalization.

Under their G6 Alliance, the Grand Alliance’s Hapag-Lloyd, Nippon Yusen Kaisha, and Orient Overseas Container Line will combine their AEX loop with the SZX service of the New World Alliance’s (NWA) APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine, and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines.

The Grand Alliance will deploy 10 vessels from its AEX loop, each with a nominal capacity of 5,800 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs), including a loop from Zim, on the merged trade lane. NWA will provide nine ships of 4,500 to 5,000 TEUs from its SZX service, which includes one loop from Evergreen.

More details on the new cooperation will be announced later.
