South Korea’s largest shipping line Hanjin Shipping is introducing a Singapore-West Australia service effective mid-January next year.

The West Australia Express (WAX) begins on January 18, 2013 with a port rotation of Singapore, Fremantle, and back to Singapore.

To provide the service, Hanjin Shipping said in an official release that it will secure vessel slots in the West Australia Container service of “K” Line and launch a new agency to promote sales in the region.

WAX will operate with two ships, each having nominal capacities of 1,700 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs).

With the new service, the carrier said they will be able to cover both the east and west coasts of Australia. Currently, it operates two services to Australia: the AUS (Australia Service) and CKA (China-Korea- Australia) loops.

Meanwhile, a rate restoration plan will be implemented by the box ship for dry and special shipments on the Asia-Europe trade lane effective January 13, 2013.

In a December 17 announcement, Hanjin said rates will increase by US$350 per TEU and $700 per 40-foot-equivalent unit on the following routes:

  • Far East Asia and Southeast Asia (including Japan) to North Europe, Baltic, and Scandinavia.
  • IPBC and the Middle East to North Europe, the Baltic, and Scandinavia
  • Far East Asia and Southeast Asia (including Japan) to the Mediterranean and North Africa
  • IPBC and the Middle East to the Mediterranean and North Africa
