Asia Airfreight Terminal (AAT), the second cargo terminal handler at Hong Kong International Airport, announced a growth of 7 percent in cargo throughput for August 2012 compared with the same period last year.

In a press release, AAT said it registered 58,985 tonnes in cargo throughput in August as both export and import cargoes posted positive growth.

Export cargo went up 8 percent to 41,396 tonnes year-over-year, while import cargo rose to 17,017 tonnes, representing a 5 percent growth. Transshipment cargo volume, however, fell to 572 tonnes, a reduction of 29 percent from a year ago.

The company’s total cargo shipments for year-to-August reached 460,019 tonnes, a 1 percent slump compared to last year’s performance.

Cumulative export throughput from January to August 2012 was 315,073 tonnes, a slight growth of 1 percent over the corresponding period last year. Total import tonnage for the first eight months was 140,849 tonnes, representing a 3 percent growth. Cumulative transshipment cargo volume was slashed by more than half, decreasing by 51 percent to 4,097 tonnes compared to the same period the previous year.
