Indonesian state-owned port operator Pelindo I is constructing a number of cargo terminal ports in the regions as a strategy to promote local industrial development.

“We are developing cargo terminal ports to support local industry such as what we are developing in Bintan to support investors in the Lobam Industrial Zone,” Pelindo I president director Bambang Eka Cahyana said, as reported by state-run Antara News.

Aside from Bintan, Cahyana said cargo terminal ports are also being built in Kijang to support bauxite mining, and in Sibolga to support gold mining activities in the area.

“Cargo terminal ports we are developing include those in Kijang, Tanjung Pinang, Sibolga, Malahayati, and Perawang,” the official said.

He added that these areas will later be connected to the Trans Sumatra Toll Road, a planned toll road from Aceh in the north to Lampung in the south along the eastern side of Sumatra Island. This will also necessitate the construction of a special bulk port for the palm oil industries.

The development of the bulk port, to be built in cooperation with an industrial zone, is expected to start in the second semester of 2018.

Cahyana said that besides developing ports of its own initiative, Pelindo I is also establishing ports under the designation of the government.

These include the government-designated Batu Ampar container terminal port of Batam, he said.
