The Indonesian government plans to form a special team to look at ways to improve its new air freight security system, which has met with much criticism from the business community, reports IFW, a freight and logistics news service.

Companies are protesting the revised system of air cargo security checks and said it weakened their products’ competitiveness on the world market.

The new security system, intended to improve cargo security at major airports, mandates cargo scans with x-ray machines by three regulated agents rather than by warehouse operators.

But industry leaders have decried the new process, saying having three regulated agents to conduct the inspections would lead to time delays and additional costs that would impact on their prices.

In response to the protests, Transport Minister Freddy Numberi recently met with officials from the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other business associations to discuss their concerns.

Numberi said after the meeting that a special team would be formed to oversee and improve the security system, IFW said.

“We will establish a team to find a better way to implement the new system and deal with existing problems, including the cargo inspection tariff,” he was quoted as saying.
