The newly constructed 3.2-kilometer eastbound portion of the Laguna Lake Highway in Taguig City is now open to the public, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The additional two lanes on the eastbound direction of Laguna Lake Highway was opened July 7 and is expected to reduce travel time from Taytay, Rizal to Bicutan, Taguig from one hour to just 30 minutes.
The new two-lane segment from Napindan to M.L. Quezon Avenue was built under Phase I and Phase II of the Laguna Lake Highway Project costing P512 million ]cost of the two-lane segment?[.
“This newly opened highway is part of a road network that we are building to ease congestion in this particular area and provide a barrier that would prevent back flow of water coming from the Laguna de Bay going to industrial and residential areas in Metro Manila,” DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said.
He said structures for pedestrians are being integrated into the road projects to ensure inclusive mobility not just for motorists, but also for bikers and the walking public.
The Laguna Lake Highway Project entails the construction and widening of two bridges; improvement and concreting of an existing dilapidated asphalt road with a provision for an additional two lanes; and construction of 2-meter-wide planting strips, a 3-meter bike lane, and a 1.5-meter sidewalk.
Laguna Lake Highway, also known as Circumferential Road 6 (C6), is located along the periphery of Laguna de Bay and links the towns of Rizal to the eastern corridor of Metro Manila.
It opened to light vehicles in 2000, serving as an alternate route for motorists wanting to avoid congestion on EDSA and Circumferential Road 5 (C5).
DPWH said that due to its strategic commercial importance, the Laguna Lake road network has become a favorite access route for all types of vehicles including heavy trucks, resulting in the early deterioration of the existing asphalt pavement.
