German airfreight carrier Lufthansa Cargo said it will expand its operations in Korea and China this year, as it anticipates Asia to eventually account for more than half of its business.

Karl Ulrich Garnadt, chairman of Lufthansa Cargo, told The Korea Herald recently that the carrier currently realizes 47 percent of its business from Asia, and the figure is growing. “Very soon it will be 50 percent. China is the most important market at 20 percent out of the total 100 percent,” he added.

Lufthansa Cargo said cargo traffic from Germany to Korea grew by 23 percent last year, making it the top non-Asian carrier in the country.

Garnadt said the carrier will raise capacity to Korea by summer to take advantage of an anticipated increase in air cargo demand triggered by trade in new hi-tech products, exports from the automotive and pharmaceutical industries, free trade agreements, and the London Olympics.
