Maersk Line announced it has won its second Sustainable Shipping Operator of the Year Award.
The award, presented by Sustainable Shipping in London on July 7, was given to Maersk Line for its investments in sustainable growth, carbon dioxide reduction, and industry transparency.
“The environmental impact of global shipping is a fundamental issue in our industry,” said Soren Stig Nielsen, head of sustainability of Maersk Line. “As an industry, we have a unique opportunity to shape our own destiny by becoming part of the solution in a low-carbon economy.”
Maersk Line said that through partnerships and extensive initiatives, the company has cut carbon dioxide emissions by more than 14 percent per container since 2007.
It said it plans to make further carbon dioxide reductions with its investments in twenty 18,000 TEUs, the so-called “Triple-E” class that is 16 percent bigger than the biggest container ship built so far. “These vessels have the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 50 percent per container moved, compared to industry average on the Asia-Europe trade.”
