BintuluMalaysia’s Bintulu Port Holdings is looking to improve its services this year at Bintulu Port, particularly stevedoring operations for its cargo-handling business.

The improvements to its freight-handling processes will be based on customer feedback, according to the port operator.

As part of its technological upgrade, the port’s Bintulu International Container Terminal will switch from its current terminal operating system to the Navis TOS in July to improve its planning tools and real-time data for more efficient ground operations.

Meanwhile, the port operator said its subsidiary Samalaju Industrial Port Sdn Bhd has won the contract to undertake the Samalaju port development project.

The infrastructure endeavor located in Samalaju, Bintulu, has an investment value of MYR47.5 million (US$14.4 million).

The first phase starts by the second quarter of the year and involves setting up electrical works and navigation aids.

Earlier reports said the port undertaking will include the construction of five wharves for handymax and handysize bulkers.

The five wharves are expected to be completed by 2016, bringing the Samalaju port’s cargo-handling capacity to 18 million tonnes per year.
