Cargo traffic at Malaysian ports rose to 10.3 million 20-foot equivalent unit (TEUs) in the first half of 2012, up from 9.85 million TEUs year-over-year.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said Port Klang, Malaysia’s premier port, was the major container handler for the period, contributing five million TEUs, up from 4.7 million TEUs for the same period a year ago, the Sun Daily reported.
Kong added that Port Klang improved in world ranking to 13th spot last year from 16th in 2007, while the Tanjung Pelepas Port in Johor moved one notch up to 17th from its 18th position in 2007 and 2008.
“Overall, Malaysian ports still recorded a positive growth in container handling in the first half of this year,” he said, as quoted by news agency Bernama in its report.
