Johor Port in Malaysia announced a five-year expansion plan costing about MYR100 million (US$31.7 million) to increase space and modernize the multipurpose port’s infrastructure, equipment, and facilities.
The modernization plan aims to boost the competitiveness of the port, located in the Pasir Gudang Industrial Estate in the southernmost tip of Peninsular Malaysia.
The development project will address the problem of space limitations by building vertically, such as reconstructing some of the warehouses into multistory facilities, according to local media reports.
Also planned are the replacement of aging cranes and port equipment, the repair of wharf structures, and the construction of four new berths for liquid cargo.
The restructuring plan is needed to meet the growing demand of industries in Pasir Gudang and surrounding areas for a bigger and more modern shipping gateway in the southern region of Malaysia, said Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman, chairman of Johor port.
