Container traffic at Port Klang in Malaysia expanded by merely 4.1 percent last year to total 9.99 million 20-foot-equivalent units from 9.6 million TEUs in 2011 as a result of a slowdown in exports to Europe and the United States.
But the country’s busiest container port, which consists of Northport and Westports, expects to keep its position as the world’s 13th busiest in 2012.
Port Klang’s transshipment volume accounted for the lion’s share of total traffic last year, adding up to 6.3 million TEUs, for a 63 percent share. Exports and imports made up the balance of 3.69 million TEUs.
Of the total, Westports processed 6.91 million TEUs for a market slice of 69 percent, while Northport handled 3.08 million TEUs.
Port Klang is predicted to breach the 10-million-TEU threshold this year and handle a total of 10.4 million standard containers.
