CONTAINER cargo handled by members of the Association of International Shipping Lines (AISL) in the Manila-Vietnam trade grew 11.19% in the first four months of the year.
AISL data showed that boxed cargo for the trade reached 3,279 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from 2,949 TEUs in the same four-month period a year ago.
Hong Kong-based Orient Overseas Container Lines cornered the bulk or 25.7% of the market with 844 TEUs, 17.6% more than 718 TEUs in the first months of 2009.
Evergreen, which was first in ranking last year, slipped to second spot in January to April 2010 as it carried 413 TEUs for a market share of 12.6%, a far cry from last year’s 28.3%. Containers transported by Evergreen were also lower by 50.7% vis-a-vis last year’s 837 TEUs.
With a market share of 12.2%, Regional Container Lines came in third after shipping 400 TEUs from 274 TEUs last year, or 46% more.
In fourth place is T.S. Lines. The Hong Kong-based carrier transported 324 TEUs for a market share of 9.9% against 3.1% last year when it handled 92 containers.
Taking the fifth slot is Nippon Yusen Kaisha, which accounted for 7.6% of the Manila-Vietnam trade. Japan’s leading carrier handled 250 TEUs, up 113.7% from 117 TEUs.
Maersk Sealand came in sixth with 7.2% of the market after shipping 238 TEUs, 6.3% lower than last year’s 254 TEUs.
Rounding up the top 10 carriers for the Manila-Vietnam trade link are Taiwanese carrier Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp, which carried 177 TEUs for a market share of 5.4%; K-Line, 161 TEUs, 4.9%; Wan Hai, 141 TEUs, 4.3%; and Cheng Lie, 105 TEUs, 3.2%.
