Asia Airfreight Terminal Co Ltd (AAT) announced a 3 percent drop in its tonnage throughput to 58,088 tonnes for May 2012 compared to the same period last year.
The cargo handler at Hong Kong International Airport blamed its continued poor performance on a volatile world economy.
Export cargo in May registered 40,092 tonnes, a slight growth of 0.1 percent year-over-year, while import cargo was 17,544 tonnes, a drop of 3 percent. Transshipment cargo volume was 452 tonnes, a reduction of 71 percent from the corresponding period in 2011.
From January to May 2012, cumulative export was 194,547 tonnes, a drop of 16 percent against same period last year. Total import tonnage for the first five months was 87,512 tones, representing a 2 percent year-on-year growth. Transshipment cargo volume since the beginning of the year was 2,470 tones, a reduction of 41 percent against the same period last year.
“The uncertainties in the market continue to dampen confidence. AAT remains cautious of the economic developments in the months ahead,” said Kenneth Yeung, general manager for corporate development.
