CMA CGM is launching a new direct service on the Asia-Red Sea route this month after stopping its old service in June.

The new service—REX 2—will replace the REX 1 service that was operated under a vessel sharing agreement (VSA) with APL and that ceased operating at the end of June.

The REX 2 will be under a VSA among CMA CGM, Hanjin Shipping, CSCL and Yang Ming. Launching is on July 22, 2012, Marseilles, France-based CMA CGM said in a press statement.

Port rotation is Shanghai, Ningbo, Kaohsiung, Skekou, Singapore, Jeddah, Sokhna, and Aqaba.

The carrier said it will deploy one vessel with a capacity of 3,900 standard containers on the lane.

The new REX 2 lane is allowing CMA CGM to remain active on this major trade with a dedicated loop from the Far East to the Red Sea market, the company said.

“It was essential for CMA CGM to offer again Egypt and Jordan calls with a direct and improved service from Asia,” said Stéphane Courquin, vice president for CMA CGM Asia MED & NAF lines.
