Saying current freight rates do not cover basic operating or transportation costs, Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) announced it will raise the rates for its Southeast Asia-Australia services from August.

OOCL said that box rates from Southeast Asia to Australia will be increased by US$200 per 20-foot-equivalent unit and $400 per 40-foot container for both dry and refrigerated cargo in the base ocean freight.

Southeast Asia covers Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, Indian Sub-Continent, Myanmar, and the Middle East.

The rate hikes take effect from August 1.

“This increase will apply on top of the existing market rates in full and subject to accessorial surcharges applicable at the time of shipment,” the Hong Kong-based shipping line said in an official release.
