PSAThe billion-dollar Phases 3 and 4 project at Pasir Panjang Terminal (PPT) of PSA Singapore Terminals—specifically designed to serve the next-generation of mega container ships—has been opened.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong led inauguration rites June 23 for the SGD3.5-billion (US$2.6 billion) expansion project that consists of almost 6,000 meters of quay length and up to 18 meters of draft.

When the expansion is fully operational by the end of 2017, Singapore will be able to handle a total of 50 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers annually, said PSA.

PPT Phases 3 and 4 feature class-leading infrastructure and the latest port innovations, such as a zero-emission, fully automated electric yard crane system. Such technologies will help raise port productivity and enhance the management of greater business complexity, said the company.

PSA is also working closely with the Singapore government on developing the future Tuas Port, which will incorporate more innovative automation systems, intelligent planning and control systems, and environmentally sustainable solutions.

Once completed, the Tuas mega container port will have a capacity of 65 million TEUs.
