Indonesia’s state-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II (Pelindo II) plans to install a radar system to monitor highway traffic flow to and from the congested Port of Tanjung Priok in North Jakarta.
Pelindo II director Robert Joost Lino said the radars will allow logistics companies to organize their movements better since they can access information on the traffic buildup at the terminal entrances before their trucks enter the highway.
Lino said the monitoring equipment will be installed at all doors to the port so that truck drivers will know which one has the least traffic at a particular time, a Pelindo II news item said.
Congestion is a major issue at the Tanjung Priok port, where 60 percent of Indonesia’s import and export activities are carried out, with large vehicles often forced to wait it out in long lines.
Lino said the cost of installing the radar network will be shouldered by Pelindo II, with PT Jasa Marga to be responsible for its operation. The formal partnership is expected to start soon, and the project reportedly has an estimated investment cost of US$5 million.
